And Another Thing About OS X…
And Another Thing About OS X…
Following my own item here the other day, On What OS X Could Learn From Windows, I was interested to read a short piece TUAW entitled Adjusting to life with a really big display.
Someone had posted a comment regarding their frustration that on a big Apple Cinema display, the menu bar could be a long, long way from the current mouse position:
Rajiv Dewan wrote in with this sob story about how awful life is with his new 30-inch Cinema Display. It seems most of his time is spent in the lower right corner of the monitor, while his most frequently used menus are about 29 inches away in the upper left corner. I must admit he has a point. It is quite annoying to have to constantly be shuffling across the whole screen.
I have three words for Rajiv: Don’t do that!
The article then went on to recommend a couple of third party utilities that can basically duplicate the current application menus at the mouse position with a simple shortcut key. This sounds to me like it’s almost advocating that every application window has it’s own menubar within the window - maybe along the top. And I thought - hey that’s not a bad idea. Then I remembered it is one of the Windows features that the diehard Mac community always condemns rather vigourously.
As a Mac Switcher, I found the single menubar model the second most dumb thing to get used to, partly because of this very problem of having to travel so far to get to it. Now it seems it is OK for me to go get utilities that help make it a little more ‘Windows’ like.
