To all people on Birth Control, what type of affect has this diet had on your cycle?

I am curious to know how many of us have problems.

Oh also I should’ve had this in my poll but if you have been on this diet for say over 3 months and are still having difficulties can you post a reply and let me know.

great idea sherrie, i am going to post next week when TOM starts, as last TOM was just when i first started LCing and not sure if any differences could be a one off. i don’t know how credible this is, but in Sandra Cabot’s Body Shaping diet, she claims that gyneoid shaped women (pear shaped) have excess oestrogen (not me, i am deficient thanks to depoprovera). sandra’s theory is that the fat deposits these women have is also highly oestrogenic. if this were true (which i am not saying it is and she doesn’t give any scientific reason for it) then losing this weight would cause fluctuations in the levels of oestrogen especially if you were taking a hormone pill. i am emailing her clinic to see what scientific basis this is made on and also doing some research to see if i can find anything to support her claim. i work for a health and science publishing company so we have a lot of books on women’s health. i’ll post anything i find out.

i think this is really important, thanks for starting this poll.

I found out a little tidbit the other day which I plan to do shortly when I have some free time.
Apparently birth control has an affect on liver metabolism and I was told I should investigate that first in regards to this diet and the pill. So I will see if I can find some info.

Anyway Sam vote now and then once it’s been about 3 months since starting diet reply here and let me know if it’s improved or not.

i was going through the cupboards last night looking for the first aid kit (we’re going camping) and found my bottle of ‘for women on the oral contraceptive pill’ it is a liver tonic. i remember my naturopath saying it was very important to help the liver while on the pill, as the liver finds it hard to process the hormones.

    will post now.

Okay C’mon I know theres more then 6 gals on birth control here…

Please vote if you are on BC…

I was the first to vote, but didn’t post because my experience is documented in my diary.

I’m off to the doc this arvo for a referral to a gynae.

There’s been lots of controversy in Victoria about medical indemnity and one of the female ob/gyn’s in Ballarat is moving to Dubai! It’s all really scary for pregnant women.

    Still shedding those kgs.

    Hi Sherrie,

I always seem to have a problem finding the right box to tick. But my problem is that I am on the pill and not experiencing any changes. I did go off the pill for a month in February(started low carbing in January) and found that I was going thru menopause - the hot flushes - wow - did they hit hard. Luckily I work in IT and have a cold server room to walk into because taking your clothes off in public just isn’t acceptable. Needless to say I tried herbal tablets that didn’t work and so went back onto the pill at Easter.

  7. Leonie Says:

I have been on the pill for nearly 10 years, never had a problem before I started low carbing.

Now TOM comes a week early every month, while I am still taking the active pills. I have been to the doctor and changed pills, but it is still happening. The doc said it might take a few months to get back on track.

  8. megan Says:

I take the pill continuously (ie - no periods), and have done so for nearly 2 years now.

I didn’t notice any changes going on to low carb, but then I probably wouldn’t I guess!

  9. Sherrie Says:

    Yay more votes!

Dmwalsh and Megan, I added another option for you

Hi, I’m new here & this post is of great interest to me.

I’ve been doing Atkins for just over 2 months & have lost 5kg so far. I’d been on the Pill for over 20 years & had my first Depo provera shot about 4 weeks ago & was terrified it would make me gain weight, but so far it hasnt. My loss has been rather slow all along but I only wanted to lose 8-10 kg in the first place. Nothing has changed really since having the injection, its still painfully SLOOOOOW but constant.

The Depo Provera has helped a lot with my headaches & mood swings though, I’m grumpy ALL the time now!LOL!

  11. PP Says:

Sherrie I don’t fit into any of the catagories. I have had my tubes tied but did not start to have problems till I started l/carbing. It is since then that I have found other reasons that have contributed to my problem. I have also noticed when I have been slack at l/carbing (consuming more carbs than i should) my blood loss has not been as great as it usually is.

  12. Funky Monkey Says:

Atkins has completly stuffed up my pill! Most of this is documented in my diary, but if this keeps happening, there is no way I will be able to stay on Atkins. I went on the pill to fix cycle problems years ago and they have come back with avengence. Now TOM comes early and lasts longer, with terrible cramps, head-spins, tiredness and a general crap feeling. I think I hate men. What suffereing do they have?

  13. sambalam Says:

anne1506, i had depo for a year and gained over 10kgs in six months. i was diagnosed with depression and was really quite a scary person while on it. i still have ongoing issues as a result of the impact depo had on my body. my doc says it should only be used as an extreme last resort for womes with serious gynae problems. it is only my opinion, but i would be extremely cautious about continuing with depo, there are other women on this forum who have had problems too.

poor funky, maybe you should up your ‘good carb’ levels and see if there is an equilibrium that will make your cycle ok and bearable. i hope things work out, it doesn’t sound like you are having much fun.

  14. starter Says:

Whilst I cannot vote as not on any birth control. I have noticed that this diet makes my periods longer and heavier than before.

But if that means I feel better the rest of the month and I have lost all of this weight I am prepared to put up with it.
