OSX and Linux Users Unite :
14.03.2010 10.55
|
Just recently it has seemed to me that the BBC has got it in for us Mac users - and that probably includes the Linux brigade as well. I do know that not that long ago I was able to watch, from the comfort of sitting in front of my Macbook Pro, video clips on the BBC News website. And I know that sometime in the last few months every attempt I have made to do just that has resulted in an empty screen. No message. No error. Just…. nothing. Yet I assume someone out there is getting it loud and clear and after reading a little snippet of news tonight, my guess is that it’s the Windows Legions.
The BBC has unveiled plans to launch an on-demand TV service delivered over the web and to receive this you need their ‘iPlayer’ software which…. wait for it…. only runs on Windows based machines. That’s two fingers from the BBC to Mac users the world over. On the basis that the BBC is a corporation funded from license fees paid by everyone who wants to receieve radio or television in the UK and that their charter disallows commercial interests or political bias and that they claim to provide a service available to ‘everyone’, this decision is not to be taken sitting down.

Dead s939 mobo or Opteron 165? :
20.03.2010 0.17
|
I recently started having problems with my Asus A8n SLI Premium mobo w/Opteron 165. System was never overclocked.
I started getting intermittent BSODs and thought it might be with my Patriot PC3200 1gb sticks. I swapped out with a Dell PC3200 I had laying around and it worked for a while. Now I can't even POST. All I get is a blank screen and nothing happens. I removed all add-in cards and even the 7600GTs. I can't even get beep codes. Do you think its the mobo or the CPU? I don't have anther board to test with. I'm guessing its the mobo since CPUs are rarely die after years of use.
Advice Please!

No battery indicator :
20.03.2010 0.21
|
I have been doing a fresh install of an old Compaq Presario 1201T notebook that I have. I have put a fresh install of Windows 2000 on it. Everything seemed to be great after the install, except I noticed it did not show the battery indicator by the clock. I went to the device manager and didn't see it there either, so I went to add new hardware. Before I had a selectable options the battery shows up near the clock and is functioning normally. I reboot, but the batter doesn't show up again. I have to go to add hardware for it to show up.
I searched the Compaq website for additional drivers, but came up empty. I figured it was something with Windows 2000, so I put in my XP disc and did the install. After completing the install, the battery indicator didn't show up in XP either! If I go to add hardware, the indicator pops up immediately again before I am even given a select option. Reboot, gone again. Add new hardware it pops up again. Checking the device manager, it is missing as well, until add hardware, then it shows up in device manager as well.
Specifically what I am looking for in device manager is called "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery".
It seems like some sort of driver issue not loading at startup, but I have not been able to find any solutions on google. Any help?

Can anyone help :

ok so like everyone else I have had the same problems with the nvlddmkm.sys BOSD & nvlddmkm.dll TDR's, or the system just locks up.
I have followed many write ups to resovle the problem, from setting the ram timings FSB, voltages etc in the bios, loads of different drivers for the chipset, graphics, and sound, reinstalling many time, for the memory I have used 800mhz, 1000mhz and 1066mhz FSB, made no differecne
last install was back in July, system seemed to be great using SLI no problems in general windows use like media centre etc but still had problems with crysis but DX9 games were fine till the other day them dam I get the problem back where even trying to use WMP or centre it causes BOSD or lock up's sometimes it can be fine untill I try using another app while one of these programs are runiing, I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall, if I can't use simple no demanding problems I deem the pc useless, I have resisted posting for as long as possible to try every way others have and nothing has worked for me, so now I'm here to ask for any possible help to shed some light on what I can do to fix this problem.
I almost forgot to add that while out of SLI the system dose seem to be fine with Media centre etc
Many thanks Chris

D945GCLF - complete with Intel Atom :
20.03.2010 0.30
|
I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of only 10 (approximately) D945GCLFs in New Zealand at the moment and I thought I'd share some of the stuff I'd learned about it for the advantage of others. Firstly, pictures:<br />
< http://destekblogu.com/bot/cache/hOn9iCSF.jpg" width="270" border="0" alt="" />
Is the board itself, without this fan:
< http://destekblogu.com/bot/cache/VvaYf35mr.jpg" width="270" border="0" alt="" />
which happens to be one of the worst fans I've ever heard. Rattles and just begged to be taken off. Not like it provides any meaningful airflow anyway.
Curiously, after entering the BIOS, I found something interesting:
< http://destekblogu.com/bot/cache/9gJoWMdRKC8G.jpg" width="270" border="0" alt="" />
Hyperthreading on an Atom!
The heat output is insanely small compared to my D201GLY2 - this does not need active cooling. I'm planning to put Smoothwall on it (in the process of doing), but as a "final-cum-initial" gotcha, the integrated ethernet chip is going to be a pain for most Linux distributions (as well as Windows I imagine) as it's the Realtek RTL8101E.
Anyone else have one? What have your experiences been?

Just ordered a portwell mitx board. need input. :
20.03.2010 0.39
|
http://www.portwell.com/products/det...=PEB-7607VG2AR I am doing a new build for a ht/gaming pc and this board fits the bill. I contacted support from portwell and asked a ton of questions, and was pleased with the answers. They basically said that the bios is unlocked and can be used for overclocking, the pci x16 has 16 lanes, and the board is compatible with the 45nm c2q's. I plan on putting a c2q q8200, 4850 (maybe the palit with shorter design), 4gb ddr2 800, and a 2 x 1tb hdds. Right now I am trying to find the perfect powersupply for it. I will be building the case from scratch and design will be very, very tight. Does anyone know of a good small 450+ watt power supply that can be used on this (can I use a 1u rack psu for this build)? Also, can some post pics of there gaming itx build? I am also debating on if I should have a optical drive built in or run an external one of the esata port.

Minestrone Soup :

Minestrone Soup
INGREDIENTS:
1 can peas
1 can string beans
2 cans tomato sauce
2 potatoes
1 tsp. parsley
2 carrots
2 stalks celery
1 onion
1 sm. cabbage
6 sm. zucchini
3/4 lb. piece salt pork
1 lg. can refried beans
Salad macaroni (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
In a large pot, slice up salt pork and fry slowly to render the wonderful pork flavor. When all liquid is rendered, remove the pieces of pork and dispose of these. Add vegetables above and slowly heat and mix, when these are heated through, add water to cover, add beans and tomato sauce. Bring this mixture to a boil, then lower the fire and simmer for about 4 hours.
Take out the amount to be used and add salad macaroni, continue to cook until macaroni is done. This is wonderful the next day, add the macaroni when heating. Serves 6-8.

GUIDE: Air-cooling for CPUs, GPUs, and just about everyone of you :
20.03.2010 0.44
|
These days, a lot of people are posting up topics looking for a good thermal solution for their new high-performance CPU. These people all have different needs, some are looking for something dirt-cheap, some look for low-noise, some look for good overall performance at a good price, some look for ease of installation, and others look for maximum performance with no boundaries (just keep it within air cooling ). Everybody's got different needs.
I usually cater to lower-noise setups, so you may substitute the Vantec Tornado in if you'd like. I'd like to keep my ears.
Air cooling doesn't have to be as complicated as it appears. It's a hell of a lot simpler than water cooling, and is usually a lot cheaper. The sheer selection you can find online is what usually scares people away. I decided to put together a quickie air-cooling guide, hopefully it'll be turned into a sticky where people can refer to it and perhaps add to it if I've missed anything. Constructive criticism, folks!
I'll lay it out in terms of Socket type (Socket A, Socket 478, Socket 754/939/940, LGA775). Lowest price in the respected socket type comes first. I'll re-use some of the descriptions because they may be the same across the different socket types. Saves me quite a bit of time too. Honourable mentions go in their respected sections.
Starting with the CPU cooling
Socket A (Athlon, Duron, AthlonXP, Sempr0n)
MASSCOOL 5F394B1L3G 80mm Copper HSF -- cheap at less than $14! The 80mm fan allows more airflow and less noise (the AMD retail thermal solution for Socket A comes with a small 60x60x10 fan which can be quite noisy), the all-copper heatsink body offers a good amount of surface area. Kinda reminds me of a cheaper (and perhaps noisier) Thermaltake Silent Boost. Even the three-pin lead is sleeved and shrinked! You really can't find another all-copper solution for this price.
Thermalright SI-97A Heatsink -- Please do note, this heatsink does not come with a fan! Moving slightly upmarket here at $34.95, but relative to what you can get out there, this is still very affordable. This is the new A revision, which adds compatibility to the new Athlon64 CPUs. Yes, you read that right, you can use this Socket A heatsink on your Athlon64 CPU when you upgrade down the road. Very cost effective. One of the best choices you can make for Socket A. It utilizes heatpipes to move heat from the heatsink base into the heatsink body above. You can have a very silent solution, or a very high-performance one, depending on the fan you choose. I'd recommend a low to medium speed 92mm Panaflo for all applications, even overclocking.
Honourable Mentions:
Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu LED
Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu LED (non-LED models also available)
Socket 478 (Pentium 4)
ARCTIC COOLING Super Silencer4 Ultra 90mm HSF -- Dirt cheap P4 cooling for under $13. The Prescotts are known to run hot, so Arctic Cooling ups the fan size to 90mm for more airflow. The Intel retail thermal solutions really aren't that bad, they're just noisy. This one should definitely be significantly quieter than the box solution. Again, you get the patented AC fan design, and the three-pin lead is sleeved and shrinked for cosmetics. Do remember that this thermal solution is designed for minimal noise, not maximum performance...
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 4 ACFZ4 HSF -- More expensive at $29, but offers a lot more performance and still maintains the low-noise output. SilentPCReview gives it a favourable review. It uses heatpipes to transfer heat from the heatsink base to the heatsink body, and the fan blows air across the aluminum fins. If possible, mount the Freezer 4 so that the fan points towards the back of the case, the rear exhaust fan will help out and further reduce temperatures. Low-weight, low-price, low-noise, and high-performance.
Thermalright XP-90 -- Fantastic performance for $25 (again, this is a heatsink alone, no fan included). Paired up with a low to medium speed Panaflo, you can enjoy low-noise performance. The XP-90 is widely regarded as one of the best values in the enthusiast community, and SilentPCReview agrees. Easy installation too. If you don't want to deal with buying a separate fan, the XP-90 Retail Package is for you. A few bucks more and you get a decent mid-speed 92mm fan included.
Thermalright XP-90C -- The more-expensive ($48), all-copper brother to the XP-90. While the XP-90 features a copper base and aluminum heatsink fins, the XP-90C is an all-copper affair. One of the better performers on the market today, it offers much better compability than it's bigger brother (the XP-120, which will be covered later). Paired up with low to medium speed 92mm Panaflo, you'll be golden. Please be advised that the XP-90C is a very heavy heatsink -- exercise care when moving your computer! Many will argue that the SI-120 is a better choice, and I agree with them -- the SI-120 will allow for more airflow with less noise and less weight, and compatibility is pretty much guaranteed!
Thermalright SI-120 -- The updated brother of the XP-120. Costs about the same too. When that heatsink was introduced, the notion of using 120mm fans was a great idea. The main issue that gave many people problems was that it's size would interfere with other components on the motherboard. Thermalright, responding to customer concerns, went back to the drawing board and came up with the SI-120. Think of it as a larger version of the SI-97A. The heatsink body itself is raised high enough so that it clears just about everything on the motherboard. If you think you are going to have problems with the XP-120's clearance, do consider the SI-120. Pair this heatsink up with the Nexus Real Silent 120mm fan or the Yate Loon D12SL-12 (the same fan, but cheaper), you can have an almost inaudible thermal solution.
Thermalright XP-120 -- This is about as big as it gets! Priced around the same as the XP-90C ($48), you have to make a decision. If your motherboard fits this behemoth, you can get away with a very low-noise solution, or a maximum performance solution. Pair this heatsink up with the Nexus Real Silent 120mm fan or the Yate Loon D12SL-12 (the same fan, but cheaper), you can have an almost inaudible thermal solution. SilentPCReview gives it a good review. Or you can pair it up with a Delta high-speed 120mm fan. Your call. Just make sure it fits! You can check P4 motherboard compatibility here.
Scythe Ninja -- A giant heatsink originally meant for passive operation, but can accomodate a 120mm fan, which makes it a very potent choice for low-noise, low-temperature cooling. It features a whopping 12 heatpipes moving heat from the copper base up to the thin aluminum fins. Pair this up with a low-speed 120mm fan (Jab-Tech gives you the option of a 120mm Yate Loon, a fantastic choice), and you'll have fantastic cooling, perhaps even better than the Thermalright offerings. This heatsink seems to work well in the P180 case, with some people using the top vent as an intake and the rear vent as an exhaust. Only downside is that the whole assembly is pretty big.
Thermaltake CL-P0114 BIG TYPHOON 4 IN 1 Heatpipe CPU Cooler -- Well what do you know? I'm recommending a TT product! The main reason for that is because TT got the performance right this time, this thing really does offer a lot of cooling potential. Downsides are the blatant 16dBA marketing (though it is still decently quiet), the size (it is very tall), and the weight.
Zalman CNPS9500-LED -- Zalman's newest entry into the high-performance cooling market. At around $70, it definitely is pricey, even compared to the Thermalrights. What I like about the 9500 is the fact that you can point the CPU cooler exhaust at a rear case fan, so any heat produced will be taken out of the case quickly. Even with an all-copper design with more surface area than the previous Zalman flower heatsinks, weight is kept to a relative minimum. A FanMate2 is included so you can run the fan as slowly as you want. If you want the full 12V, disconnect the FanMate2 and plug the 9500 directly into the motherboard. As mentioned earlier, the orientation of the 9500 does matter, so do check out the fantastic instructions that Zalman has up.
Honourable Mentions:
Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu LED (non-LED models also available)
Coolermaster Hyper48

Newb trying to learn about OC and system :
20.03.2010 0.49
|
I am intersted in OC'ing my machine and was looking for a stable 3.0-3.2 GHZ with an air cooled system (Zallman 9500).
I raised the FSB to 1180 MHZ and was able to pull about 2.94-2.95.
I had tried out 1200 and ran Prime 95 then tried benchmarking and the system rebooted itself so I put it back to 1180. I have not messed with the Mem MHZ which is at 800. Any suggestions?
Timings are 5,5,5,15, 2T 2.1 volts
in the advanced settings what do these mean?
tRRD 5
tRC 33
tWR 6
tWTR 11
tREF 7.8vS
CPU multiplier is still 10X
PCI or was that PCE?-100
SPP- Auto I had messed with this but do not know what it does.
Any suggestions/help is greatly appreciated!

Windows XP Permissions Screwed Up :
20.03.2010 0.54
|
So a coworker tells me that she would like a password on her computer. Fairly easy thing to do, right?
Well, I'm able to set a password, but find out that her account is set as a Guest account. This the default account that she set up when we first got the laptop for her, a Dell Vostro 1500. Come to find out that the night before she tried to set a password herself, and after some Googling entered "control userpassword2" into the Run dialog and apparently messed around in there. It's been a while since I've ever looked at that window so I don't really remember what's in there.
Whatever she did, trying to log into the Administrator account (which has a blank password, btw) results in a dialog box saying "Unable to log in because of an account restriction." When the computer boots up, The Welcome screen appears but no user names are listed. I have to press Ctrl Alt Del twice to bring up the classic login, type in her user name, and log in that way.
Trying to run that "userpassword2" dialog again comes up with a message asking for an administrator password, but even though the password is blank, it won't open it up.
Is there any way to fix this without reformatting? Is there a way to set the permissions back to "default?"

* Bandwidth Overage Protection
* Free rapid setup
* FREE! SSL Certificate
* FREE! Google® Adwords® Credit*
* FREE! Microsoft® adCenter Credit†
* 24×7 FTP access
* Linux: CentOS 4
* 3 Dedicated IPs
* Admin access: Install and run virtually anything on the server.
* Manage multiple Web sites: Host multiple Web sites on one server account.
* Versatility: A dedicated server/virtual dedicated server can be used for a wide variety of purposes, including gaming, virtual (i.e., shared) hosting, and hosting of traffic-intensive Web sites.
Unlike normal hosting plans, which put many customers’ accounts on a single server, a dedicated server is reserved exclusively for the account and usage of a single customer. This means that the dedicated server customer has exclusive rights to the server’s bandwidth, memory and storage space; performance will not be affected by traffic and usage patterns of other customers.
When you purchase a dedicated server, you actually lease a server box, which will be configured and set up according to your preferences, but remains at our data center. A dedicated server account provides a dedicated IP address and full control of server usage and software installation, as you have admin (root) access to the server.
Dedicated servers are particularly useful for companies and individuals that run very-high-traffic Web sites or applications and thus need the bandwidth, versatility, and consistent performance of a dedicated box. This means that you can use the server for a wide variety of purposes, including gaming, database management, and traffic-intensive Web sites.

Child Vaccinations :
20.03.2010 1.08

I've been reading about child vaccinations and thiomersoa lately (One here and here) which have been making be feel a bit confused about getting Maya vaccinated and bad for the ones shes already had.
Anyway I was looking some more today as she has 6 month ones coming up and found this which was a bit of relief so thought I'd share: http://immunise.health.gov.au/myth_thiomersal.pdf
Still didn't see any mention on the polio plus the prevenar is new so not mentioned there, so will keep looking.
I am relived though but boy I feel horrible for Ryan as he had all those nasty ones with thiomersal, I hope it doesn't have any consequences later in his life!
Keep in mind adult ones still have this!

HTPC died, need to replace quickly. :
20.03.2010 1.08
|
Alright, my trusty HTPC has seem to bite the dust (Biostar T-force 7050, AMD 4000+, 2 gigs of ram, 2TB across several hard drives, Happagauge(sp?) HVR1600 and 250). For the past couple of days it has been hardlocking on me, and today it really loves to hang at the post screen. Since I am already having withdrawal, I need to get this replaced asap. Since I already have several hard drives, 2 gigs of ram, a dvd rom, etc, I'm just going to go for the things I need and a few improvements. Since I have been out of the loop for a while, I desperately need some recommendations for solid, inexpensive hardware. I am basically looking for a new motherboard/processor combo, but would also like to upgrade my video card and psu while I am at it. I don't do any gaming, this is pretty much a server that is exclusively used for HDTV/SDTV/MPEG and Divx videos. My budget would be in the $300-400 dollar range, preferably cheaper. Since I do alot of encoding, I figure I should get a decent processor. For the video card, I am lost. I want one that will be able to do all the hardware encoding/decoding I will need for all my tv purposes, but I don't need it to be over the top for gaming really. For the motherboard, I am just looking for something with 4 or more sata ports and 3 or 4 pci slots. Lastly, I think I will probably need a psu in the 400 watt range because of the 4 hard drives I have. Any recomendationf or the 4 things I need?
Cliff Notes:
-Old HTPC looks like it's a gonner.
-Need recommendations for a motherboard, processor, video card and psu.
-300-400 budget, exclusivly used as a server/htpc.

A question of copyright? Or maybe morality? :
20.03.2010 1.12
|
Summary:
Is it "legal" to copy an article from X website, rewrite it and then republish on Y website?
Example:
Lets say X website has the following article:
Quote:
The newest version of OpenOffice, version 3.0, has set a download record in its first week of availability. Most surprising is the fact that over 80% of downloads were from Windows users. As one commentator noted, when it comes to a choice between almost identical software (e.g. Microsoft Office and OpenOffice), price is the determining factor
FreddieWebmaster "copies" this article and rewrites and repulishes as follows:
Quote:
The recent release of OpenOffice version 3.0 has, in its first week, set a new download record. Considering the perceived dominance of the Microsoft Office suite, a curious if not remarkable fact is that over 80% of these downloads were from Windows users. Therefore it would seem that when it comes to a choice between similar software packages, price is a critical factor.
Although using different words, the two articles say exactly the same thing and give the same information to the reader. So the question is: has FreddieWebmaster broken copyright law and is now in a position that leads him open to legal action? If this is "legal" is it "moral"?

Issues with TWIN2X4096-6400C5 Ram :
20.03.2010 1.13
|
Hi,
I recently brought 4gb of the above memory from ebay adertised as brand new, i put together a new build which consisted of a Gigabyte GA73pvm-s2h mobo and a intel E6600 processor, i set up the computer and put everything in but when i powered on i got a beep pause beep pause beep pause noise which indicated a problem, i removed one 2GB stick and i got a normal start up, i installed XP and setup the computer, but the screen went black.
I took the ram out and used some ******** 1gb from another pc, computer powered up and went straight to xp login screen, so i have an issue with the ram i am assuming.....
If i try to put both 2GB corsair sticks in, the computer wont boot, one stick it will boot and then screen goes black, i think 1 stick may be broke even though i got told it was new..... asides from that what other reason is there as to why the ram wont work?

Vodafone And The Dumb Use Of IT :

Vodafone And The Dumb Use Of IT
id39401.gifAs an old computer software man I can hardly complain about the use of IT in business. Having promoted it for so many years, I can truly see the benefits. But, like any other tool, it has to be used correctly and sadly, many companies large and small just don’t really get the right balance in the interface between their IT systems and their customers. They so often leave out the bit in the middle - which is a human being.
Take Vodafone for example. For just over a year I have had a contract with them on a datacard which works well on my PowerBook and has allowed me to access email and the web from just about anywhere. The trouble is, I haven’t really been using it enough to warrant the monthly payment so, last week, I wrote to their disconnection department to cancel the contract. I did the obvious thing; I told them why I was cancelling and explained that if I could tie up the SIM on the datacard with a mobile phone contract at a sensible price then I might remain interested. I also informed them that I had been into a couple of Vodafone shops to ask this very question and no-one seemed to know the answer.
So the letter goes off and arrives at Vodafone and some dumb person there does what they have been told to do - use the computer system. Whatever you do, don’t actually read the bloody letter. Don’t, whatever you do, use your brain and think - hey, this guy is looking for a solution to a problem; I wonder if we can help him. Just call up his record and click on the disconnect button and then generate a written response that basically says: ‘Please let us know why you are cancelling your contract. If there is any service we can offer you that might make you stay we’ll bend over backwards to accommodate you. We’ll even cut the price of your contract so we are cheaper than the competition. In fact Andy, we’ll do whatever it takes to keep you as a customer‘

Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) 8.7 Premium Release Aug,21 2008 :
20.03.2010 1.21
|
DAP is all about the speed...
* The fastest possible download speeds
* A simple and familiar interface
* Expansion for smooth video viewing
* Quick upload and large file transfer
Accelerates downloads for all Internet connections
Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) will accelerate the speed with which you can receive files over the Internet using FTP and HTTP protocols by simultaneously downloading several file segments from the same or different servers.
Download Accelerator Plus enables you to pause and resume downloads, and to recover from a dropped Internet connection.
In addition, DAP searches for mirrors and implements the downloads from the best or most responsive mirrors. It is configured by default to automatically Integrate into your Explorer or Netscape browser when it is installed, and to self-activate each
time a download is performed.
No further configuration or action is required on your part - simply use your browser to access the desired site, click on the download file, and respond to the self-explanatory DAP dialogs that appear.
Advanced options enable you to tailor the operation and responses of the application to your needs. You can choose to trigger specific responses such as messages, queue update, closing the application, and disconnecting after the download is completed or is not available.
DAP is fully integrated into the browser, providing the best possible performance from ANY Internet connection, broadband and narrowband (cable, DSL / ADSL, T1, dial-up etc.).
DAP will allow you to benefit from a faster and more reliable download experience, optimize your download performance, and help you to recover interrupted downloads. DAP is available in two versions: a Free version (ads. supported) and a Premium version (with a richer set of features and no ads.).
